In all honesty I just wanted this little bit of winter colour on my grid, which seemed as good enough a reason as any. I’m here for all the festive magic please🎄

Introducing Penny and Parsley ❤️. Named by Arlo, a Fireman Sam fan who was also given a list of herbs as suggestions 🙈. I was quite sure I didn’t want any other hens for some time. Losing Willow sucked and I’m very aware we are on what feels like borrowed time with both Cin and Saff. If you’ve been here a while, you might remember I’d made a friend at a rehoming who saves commercial hens ad hoc when she can. They’re hens who would otherwise be killed for health reasons rather than letting them ‘suffer’ in the barns. She is amazing. I was in touch to say next Summer would be our time. But there were two who needed a home. A scrappy little character who was being slaughtered as she’d not come into lay at a year and a beautiful hen who is afraid of absolutely everything and everyone. In many ways it reminded me of Marble and Nutmeg (💔), and so off I went with my dog crate. And goodness, am I glad I did. I was in love in about five seconds and they’ve made the garden feel somehow right again. There won’t ever be another Willow, but we can give a loving home to two little complex, sentient characters who’ve had an utterly crap start in life. However long they’re with us for, we’ll try to ensure their retirement is wonderful. Welcome to the family - how lucky we are to have you. They spent the last two nights getting settled in the spare coop (Willow’s favourite spot) but tonight are in the main coop, so I’ll be armed with coffee at 6.45am to see how they got on…🫠

The allotment turning 🍂. Still collecting the odd handful of raspberries, dahlias finally flowering. I’m going to try and get the garlic in this weekend but there’s no rush for spring bulb planting over here 🌷. Plenty of time - I’ll wait for a cold snap before I start planting tulips to be on the safe side, rather than risk fungal diseases like Tulip Fire. (Also because there are so many bulbs to plant out that delaying the task seems a good idea… 🫢)
